¿Cuántos jóvenes se han formado como médicos en la ELAM?
Unos 29 mil médicos de 90 países se han formado en la Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina, ELAM, de La Habana, fundada por el Líder Histórico de la Revolución Fidel Castro, indica este lunes un despacho de la Agencia Cubana de Noticias.
La Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina (ELAM), fundada por el Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro, en sus 14 graduaciones ha formado a casi 29 mil médicos de 90 países, informó un especialista de esa institución.
En diálogo con la ACN, Luis Estruch, profesor Emérito de la ELAM, destacó que este constituye uno de los grandes logros de la Revolución cubana y del pensamiento de Fidel Castro, porque ese centro docente surgió el 15 de noviembre de 1999, luego del paso de dos huracanes por Centroamérica y el Caribe.
Cuba tenía que enviar de dos mil a tres mil médicos a esos países a prestar ayuda, y el líder de la Revolución dijo: por qué no les preparamos los médicos a las naciones?, que ellos envíen a los jóvenes de los lugares más recónditos y se formen aquí, recordó el experto.
Al inicio se otorgaron 500 becas para Centroamérica, después mil, posteriormente cinco mil y 10 mil, por lo cual devino un gran proyecto; esta es la obra de Fidel Castro, la única escuela de ese tipo en el mundo para formar médicos de otros países de forma totalmente gratuita es la ELAM, resaltó el entrevistado.
Según Estruch, las dos terceras partes de los graduados tienen el título convalidado en sus naciones donde ejercen, de ellos hay dos ministros de Salud Pública: la de Bolivia y la de Costa Rica, también viceministros, directores provinciales de salud y científicos.
Precisó que del total de egresados, la tercera parte ha hecho la especialidad en los consultorios médicos de Cuba, y en otras instituciones sanitarias, y luego al regresar a sus países llegan con el título de médico y el de especialista.
El profesor Emérito de la ELAM señaló que el sueño de Fidel de preparar jóvenes pobres para las naciones subdesarrolladas se está cumpliendo y actualmente hay cerca de dos mil estudiantes no sólo de la región, sino de todos los continentes, por lo cual se ha convertido en una escuela mundial.
Se sigue desarrollando su pensamiento de formarlos en los valores humanos, en la solidaridad, en contacto con la comunidad, manifestó.
Cuba le ha preparado mil 100 médicos a Haití, 800 a Timor Leste, y 172 jóvenes norteamericanos, la mayoría de ellos convalidados en Estados Unidos, donde ejercen en barrios pobres y promueven programas comunitarios; son cosas extraordinarias y de impacto para el futuro de esos Estados, recalcó.
Eso nadie lo hubiera pensado, el día que Fidel ofreció becas para Estados Unidos y actualmente se preparan en la nación antillana más de 80 jóvenes de ese país, acotó.
También Cuba ha creado nueve facultades de Medicina en África, con profesores y el método cubano; en tanto el programa más exitoso es el de Venezuela, donde se han graduado 22 mil Médicos Integrales Comunitarios y cerca de 20 mil están en formación (Con información de ACN).
La Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina, un poco de historia
El proyecto de la ELAM forma parte del Programa Integral de Salud (PIS), con que Cuba extiende solidariamente la colaboración médica a varios países, y es una muestra de lo que puede hacer una nación pobre en recursos económicos, pero rica en capital humano y con la voluntad política necesaria para ayudar a otros pueblos. Es el resultado del pensamiento y voluntad política del Presidente cubano Fidel Castro, artífice de este proyecto. La institución educa gratuitamente en ciencias médicas a jóvenes humildes de Latinoamérica, África y Estados Unidos, los que luego de un período de seis años, retornarán a sus comunidades para contribuir a la sostenibilidad de sus sistemas de salud.
Se encuentra situada al noreste de la capital de Cuba, Km 3 1/2 de la Carretera Panamericana , Santa Fe, Ciudad de La Habana. Las instalaciones pertenecían a la Academia Naval Granma y fueron cedidas por el Ministerio de las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias (MINFAR). Ocupa un área de 1 200 000 m2.
Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina
La idea de crear la Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina (ELAM) surge a finales del siglo XX, luego de que los países de la región sufrieran los embates de los huracanes George y Mitch, fenómenos que ocasionaron en 1998 unos 10 mil muertos y desaparecidos, y millones de damnificados, además de daños en las economías de los países centroamericanos y caribeños. Aquel ambiente motivó el envío inmediato de brigadas de médicos cubanos para ayudar a la población afectada en los parajes más remotos.
Ante esta situación es que el 21 de noviembre de 1998, el Presidente Fidel Castro lanza la idea de crear en Cuba una escuela para formar, gratuitamente como médicos, a jóvenes procedentes de naciones de Centroamérica y el Caribe, devastadas por estos huracanes, que dejaron a su paso un alto número de víctimas e incalculables daños materiales.
Apenas tres meses después de hecho público el solidario gesto del gobierno cubano, las instalaciones de la otrora Academia Naval Granma, al oeste de la capital del país, fueron reconstruidas, remodeladas y transformadas en la Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina, y el 27 de febrero de 1999 arribaron los primeros estudiantes procedentes de Nicaragua.
Al inaugurarse el 15 de noviembre de ese mismo año por el Jefe de Estado cubano, en unión de otros mandatarios, en ocasión de celebrarse en La Habana la IX Cumbre Iberoamericana de Jefes de Estado y de Gobierno, la ELAM iniciaba su primer curso con 1 933 jóvenes de 18 países.
La idea y los conceptos que la sustentan, se remontan al triunfo de la Revolución, a su proyección internacionalista en la salud con el envió de médicos a Argelia en 1963, a la sensibilidad por la miseria (Con información de Ecured).
