A todos llamaba la atención la imagen de Stephen Hawking, un científico que no podía hablar con su propia voz, por culpa de una cruel enfermedad nombrada esclerosis lateral amiotrófica (ELA), pero a pesar de ello su huella en la ciencia fue tan grande que traspasó con sus investigaciones las fronteras del tiempo.

Foto: InternetNo fue casualidad de que Hawking naciera un 8 de enero de 1942, 300 años después de la muerte del padre de la ciencia moderna, Galileo Galilei y tal vez sin proponérselo se convirtió en el científico más popular de los últimos años.Gran parte de sus trabajos se centraron en unir la relatividad y la teoría cuántica para explicar la creación y el funcionamiento del cosmos. «Mi objetivo es simple, es entender completamente el universo, por qué es como es y por qué existe simplemente», expresó en una ocasión.
A pesar de sus sustanciales investigaciones científicas nunca obtuvo el Nobel de Física, lo cual se explica debido a que el premio que otorga la Real Academia de Ciencias de Suecia exige que las teorías galardonadas tengan una comprobación empírica. Argumenta el diario argentino El Clarín al respecto, que Hawking no alcanzó el preciado reconocimiento, debido a que la tecnología actual no le permitió captar pruebas suficientes que pudieran verificar sus postulados sobre los agujeros negros, una de sus investigaciones más trascendentales.Otros de sus postulados científicos estuvieron centrados en unir la relatividad y la teoría cuántica para explicar la creación y el funcionamiento del cosmos. Hawking además fue un temprano defensor de la teoría del Big Bang para explicar el origen del Universo.
Hawking desde los 32 años había formado parte del órgano científico más prestigioso del Reino Unido, conocido como la Royal Society ;integrante además de la Academia Pontificia de las Ciencias y de la Academia Nacional de Ciencias de Estados Unidos y titular de la Cátedra Lucasiana de Matemáticas (Lucasian Chair of Mathematics) de la Universidad de Cambridge desde 1979 hasta su jubilación en 2009.Por sus aportes a la ciencia recibió varias distinciones, como doce doctorados honoris causa, la Orden del Imperio Británico (grado CBE) en 1982, el Premio Príncipe de Asturias de la Concordia en 1989, la Medalla Copley en 2006, la Medalla de la Libertad en 2009 y el Premio Fundación BBVA Fronteras del Conocimiento en 2015.
