Este es Gabriel García Fernández. Tiene 12 años y se hizo popular de la noche a la mañana en las redes sociales este lunes, porque fue el primer niño o adolescente en ser vacunado como parte del ensayo clínico llamado Soberana Pediatría, que comenzó el pasado lunes con la aplicación de la primera dosis de Soberana 02.
Incluso el primer secretario del Partido y presidente de Cuba Miguel Díaz-Canel le trasmitió su alegría, y le pidió que les dijera a sus compañeros que “estamos orgullosos de ellos”. Y claro que hay orgullo y reconocimiento hacia los 350 sujetos que se involucrarán en este ensayo, con edades comprendidas entre 3 y 18 años, todos voluntarios.
Y enfatizo en la palabra, voluntarios, porque nadie: ni niño, ni adolescente, ni padre, va obligado a poner su hombro. No hay que pagar ni recibir nada a cambio por participar en el ensayo, salvo la esperanza de vencer a la Covid-19. Incluso me atrevería a decir que este es más bien el sueño de muchos padres como yo, preocupados ante un contexto epidemiológico tan complejo, donde la curva de contagios mantiene su vertiginoso ascenso hasta nadie sabe dónde. Que en los últimos cuatro días hayamos tenido los números más altos de casos positivos reportados hasta hoy desde el inicio de la pandemia, es la prueba más elocuente de que el final de esta historia no está al doblar de la esquina, ni siquiera porque La Habana haya mostrado estadísticas más alentadoras en las jornadas recientes.
Los contagios en edades pediátricas han ganado protagonismo. Ayer 238, y esta fue la cifra de hoy: 202. Es como para alarmarse; y como para entender también la validez del ensayo clínico con Soberana 02 y Soberana Plus, que lamentablemente algunos ya han calificado en redes sociales como un experimento, y han llegado a aconsejar a los padres que se abstengan de inmunizar a sus hijos. Lo llamativo es que el supuesto experimento, que no lo es, responde a una lógica científica universal, y es el esquema que han seguido, por ejemplo, Moderna y Pfizer, que comenzaron sus ensayos clínicos en niños hace apenas 3 meses.Pero vamos a lo nuestro, y para entender mejor este proceso, acudo una vez más a la ciencia. En el sitio clínico del Hospital Pediátrico Juan Manuel Márquez, aquí en La Habana, donde tiene lugar el estudio Soberana Pediatría, se encuentra la doctora en ciencias Meiby Rodríguez González, directora de investigaciones clínicas del Instituto Finlay de Vacunas. Esta mañana le envié algunas preguntas y ella amablemente me hizo llegar las respuestas vía Internet.
1. En primer lugar le pregunté a la doctora sobre el modo de selección. Quiénes son elegibles? Cómo ser parte del ensayo? Porque no han sido pocas las personas que se han acercado al Instituto Finlay de Vacunas interesados en participar. Y esto fue lo que respondió.
2. Otro elemento importante tiene que ver con la experiencia del IF en el uso de estas plataformas para vacunas infantiles. Le pregunté a la doctora si había antecedentes de este tema o si se trata de algo nuevo. Y ella contestó.
3. Y a todos los padres nos preocupa lo mismo: ¿Hasta qué punto es seguro para la salud de los niños y adolescentes involucrados, el hecho de formar parte de un ensayo clínico? Es un experimento, como se ha comentado no sin mala intención en redes sociales?
La vacunación pediátrica es un camino necesario, pero no es la única alternativa o tabla de salvación, sobre todo porque se trata de un proceso que demora. Soberana 02 tiene un esquema de 28 días entre dosis, no lo olvidemos. Así que mientras se desarrolla la Fase 1-2 de este ensayo clínico en niños y adolescentes, lo mejor es seguir cuidando a nuestros pequeños, de los cuales 2788 ya han padecido la COVID-19. Y de eso no puede encargarse la ciencia, porque esa protección es, sobre todo, responsabilidad de los padres y de toda la familia.
