In the afternoon of yesterday, December 18, Reserve Brigadier General Lorenzo García Frías passed away.The cause of his death was the product of acute kidney failure, as a result of a Neoplasia.
He was born on August 10, 1937, in the Plátano municipal term of Niquero, former Oriente Province, in the bosom of a humble family of peasant origin.When the expedition members from the Granma yacht landed and after the Alegría de Pio battle, he and his father and brothers dedicated himself to collecting weapons and transporting expedition members to safe places.He had an active participation in the meeting of Fidel and Raúl in Cinco Palmas on December 18, 1956 and when 64 years of this historic event were completed, he died at the age of 83.In September 1957, he joined Column number one under the orders of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz and later he was appointed to the Third Front Doctor “Mario Muñoz”, under the orders of Commander Juan Almeida Bosque, being one of the founders of this guerrilla front. He participated in several combative actions, among which the combat of Pino del Agua, Santo Domingo, El Jigüe, Las Mercedes, El Cobre, Cerco de Maffo and The taking of the Palma Soriano barracks stand out, among others. At the end of the war he had reached the rank of Captain of the Rebel Army.At the triumph of the Revolution, he was appointed Head of an Infantry Company in the Managua Military Camp.
During his transit through the Revolutionary Armed Forces, he held important responsibilities among which are: Chief of Infantry Division, Chief of Staff of the Isla de Pinos Military Region, today Isla de la Juventud, Chief of Infantry Division in the Central Army , Substitute for the Western Army Chief for Combative Preparation, Division Chief of the Territorial Troops Militias, Second Chief of the Combative Preparation Directorate among others.
In his professional life as a combatant and officer of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, he was promoted in military rank from soldier to Brigadier General.He fulfilled an internationalist mission in the Republic of Angola.The accumulated merits made him creditor of the condition of founder of the Communist Party of Cuba.
He maintained a constant concern for their improvement, graduating from the Basic course for officers in Matanzas, the Basic course for officers at the FAR Academy “General Máximo Gómez” and course studies at the “Frunze” Academy in the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.For his contributions to the defense of the Homeland, he was awarded different decorations by the Council of State and the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, among which are: The Order of Valor “Camilo Cienfuegos” and “For the Service to the Homeland in the FAR ”of Third Degree,“ The medals of a combatant of the clandestine struggle ”and of“ The liberation war ”, the“ Ignacio Agramonte of 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class ”,“ For the victory Cuba – RPA ”, “For the Exemplary Service to the Homeland”, “20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 Anniversary of the FAR, among othersHis body was cremated and his ashes will be transferred to the town of El Plátano, current Municipality of Pilón, Granma province, where the military funeral honors will be performed.
